More than 400 families in Madidi village are now closer to having secure and dignified homes following the completion and handover of housing units through the North West Department of Human Settlements.
The milestone was marked recently when North West MEC for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs, Gaoage Oageng Molapisi, handed over the completed houses to beneficiaries.
The R87 million housing project comprises 517 planned housing units, of which 466 have been fully completed, while the remaining 51 units are at various stages of completion and are expected to be completed by the end of October 2026. The project is among several projects currently being unblocked by the Department of Human Settlements as part of its efforts to accelerate housing delivery and address housing backlog in the province.
“As government, we are determined to fast-track the delivery of houses. We will also continue to prioritise women, persons with disabilities, the elderly and child-headed households. I am encouraged by the progress we are making in addressing blocked projects across the province and I remain confident that we will continue to overcome these challenges,” said MEC Molapisi.
One of the beneficiaries, 69-year-old William Mkhabela, a social grant recipient could not contain his happiness when MEC Molapisi handed over the keys to his new home.
He expressed his gratitude to the department and added that the house would provide a lasting legacy for him and his family. “I am grateful for the house I am receiving today. The wait was worth it. I appreciate the government’s assistance and hope that it will continue extending its support to many others who are still in need of homes,” said Mkhabela.
MEC Molapisi was accompanied by the Acting Executive Mayor of Madibeng Local Municipality, Cllr Carol Montsho; the Executive Mayor of Bojanala Platinum District Municipality, Cllr Dikeledi Suzan Nthangeni; MMC Motladi Modipane and Ward 3 Councillor Keaobaka Sefike.
