HUMAN SETTLEMENTS TO ADDRESS THE HOUSING CHALLENGES IN THE NORTH WEST PROVINCE

The Department of Human Settlements has resolved to assess and evaluate all
blocked projects to address the housing backlog in the province. The decision follows the decision to prioritise unblocking blocked projects and further speed-up the process of housing delivery.

According to Human Settlements MEC Gaoage Oageng Molapisi the department
needs to put its main focus on the target set out in the departmental annual plan as well as to assess the performance as per target set. MEC Molapisi said that the department has been allocated a budget of R1.8 billion to drive the development of housing in the province, and he believes that the allocation will assist greatly in addressing current challenges experienced by the department.

“This financial year we will be focussing on unblocking blocked projects. We are
allocating 80% of the budget to unblock and complete multi-year projects, while the remaining 20%, will be dedicated to launching new housing developments across the province.

It doesn’t make sense to look into new projects when we still have unfinished
projects”
“This approach aims to maximise impact, accelerate delivery, and restore confidence in the housing programme by ensuring that incomplete project are completed before launching new ones”, Molapisi said
The department will be convening back to back sessions to evaluate performance
starting from the beginning of the second quarter of the financial year.

The move is said to be part of monitoring all active projects closely to prevent the emergence of new blocked projects.

The department is also on the ground, working hand in hand
with municipalities and stakeholders to stay ahead.

Molapisi emphasised that all the commitments contained in the 2025/26 policy
statement will be realised, and will further ensure access to decent human settlements for all.
