RUSTENBURG – The MEC for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs, Gaoage Oageng Molapisi, has called on Human Settlements officials to intensify their efforts
in delivering critical services, particularly housing, across the North West province. Speaking during
the department’s strategic planning session held in Rustenburg on Tuesday, the MEC emphasised
the importance of the District Development Model (DDM) as central to coordinated service delivery
in the province.
MEC Molapisi believes that the Department must drive a focused approach in delivery on our
constitutional mandate and deliver on the commitments the people of the North West as working in
silos delays progress and fails our communities.
He also urged the department to prioritise the eradication of mud houses, reaffirming the
department’s commitment to delivering 3,555 new housing units during the current financial year.
These new projects will account for 20% of the department’s total budget, while the remaining 80%
will be allocated to unblocking stalled housing projects across the province.
“Project preparation and oversight must become non-negotiable. We cannot afford further delays in
the delivery of basic services, especially housing,” said MEC Molapisi.
The MEC also expressed serious concern over the slow pace of upgrading informal settlements,
calling for an urgent and comprehensive strategy to provide basic services such as water, sanitation,
and electricity as a first step toward permanent housing solutions.
He instructed departmental officials to strengthen monitoring and evaluation processes, especially
during the upcoming fourth-quarter oversight visits, which will assess the quality of completed
housing projects.
“Contractors must know we have a zero-tolerance policy for poor workmanship. Equally, officials
who sign off on substandard work will be held accountable,” concluded MEC.
